Applied Speciation offers ultra trace mercury analysis by cold vapor inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CV-ICP-MS). Employing the cold vapor reaction prior to introduction into the ICP-MS yields an almost spectral free interference ion beam while reaching an almost 100% transfer efficiency of the mercury into the system. This equates to ultra trace detection limits (0.5ng/L) without the need for sample dilution in most cases. Samples with as much as 10,000mg/L total dissolved solids (flue gas desulfurization wastewater) do not require dilution prior to analysis. This robust method of analysis allows for maximum automation which significantly decreases the per sample cost for analysis.
Ultra low level total mercury analysis of routine water samples has been well established using EPA Method 1631 using cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS). The capacity of Method 1631 to maintain low detection limits is hindered upon the presence of organic compounds and elevated concentrations of trace metals. Although EPA Method 1631 may achieve detection limits of 0.5ng/L for river water complex waste from industrial process necessitate dilution which may increase the detection limit as much as 10,000x.
The CV-ICP-MS method at Applied Speciation has been fully validated in accordance with EPA requirements for alternate test methods. A robust mercury method with ultra trace detection limits at a fraction of the cost…that’s Applied Speciation.
